چکیده

We present a hydrodynamic model that captures the essence of granular dynamics in a vibrating bed. We carry out the linear stability analysis and uncover the instability mechanism that leads to the appearance of the convective rolls via a supercritical bifurcation of a bouncing solution. We also explicitly determine the onset of convection as a function of control parameters and confirm our picture by numerical simulations of the continuum equations. PACS numbers: 47.20.-k, 46.10+z, 81.35.+k Granular materials in a container subjected to vertical vibrations display interesting nonlinear dynamical behaviors. [1–6] Nothing really happens for Γ = Aω/g < 1, where A and ω are the frequency and the amplitude of the oscillations and g is the gravitational constant. But for 1 < Γ, the granular materials collectively move up and down, which we term the uniform bouncing [7], until Γ reaches the critical value Γc beyond which such a uniform bouncing motion becomes unstable and the permanent convective rolls develop inside the bulk. [3–5] Recent studies have revealed further complexity of this problem for values of Γ much larger than one, where reverse convection [5] and bubble formation [6] have been E-mail address: [email protected] E-mail address: [email protected]

A Comparative Solution of Natural Convection in an Open Cavity using Different Boundary Conditions via Lattice Boltzmann Method

A Lattice Boltzmann method is applied to demonstrate the comparison results of simulating natural convection in an open end cavity using different hydrodynamic and thermal boundary conditions. The Prandtl number in the present simulation is 0.71, Rayleigh numbers are 104,105 and 106 and viscosities are selected 0.02 and 0.05. On-Grid bounce-back method with first-order accuracy and non-slip met...

Computational Simulation of Hydrodynamic Convection in Rising Bubble Under Microgravity Condition

In this work, rising of a single bubble in a quiescent liquid under microgravity condition was simulated. The related unsteady incompressible full Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a conventional finite difference method with a structured staggered grid. The interface was tracked explicitly by connected marker points via hybrid front capturing and tracking method. One field approximatio...

Two Hydrodynamic Models of Granular Convection

We present two continuum models A and B to study the convective instability of granular materials subjected to vibrations. We carry out the linear stability analysis for model A and uncover the instability mechanism as a supercritical bifurcation of a bouncing solution. We also explicitly determine the onset of convection as a function of control parameters. The simulations results are in excel...

Numerical Simulation of Granular Column Collapses with Pressure-Dependent Viscoplastic Model using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic Method

This paper presents a numerical analysis of granular column collapse phenomenon using a two-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics model and a local constitutive law proposed by Jop et al. This constitutive law, which is based on the viscoplastic behaviour of dense granular material flows, is characterized by an apparent viscosity depending both on the local strain rate and the local press...

Hydrodynamic instabilities in ferronematics.

In the hydrodynamic description of ferronematics there are various dynamic magnetic-field effects, linear in the field strength, that are negligible in usual nematics, but can play a role in ferronematics. Here, we investigate theoretically the influence of these new terms on the thermal convection (Rayleigh-Bénard) and the viscous fingering (Saffman-Taylor) instability in ferronematics in the ...
